Intermission 3

Intermission 3: The other two.

As I started going down the stairs to my apartment, I got a chill down my spine.
I pulled out my pistol and stopped for a moment.
Sure enough, I could hear footsteps, but they sounded alive, which in this situation was worse.

I was waiting in the stairway, so that I could see the door to the apartment, it was slightly open, to give that "long since abandoned" feeling.
I could hear someone walking up the stairs right below me.

Sounded like two, one was probably a kid...
Can't be fooled by a cute face, keep your head, if they make a move at you it's either you or them!
They entered the apartment next to mine, after looking around they walked outside again.
As they walked closer to my apartment I got a good look of them, a young woman and a girl.
And just as they were going to open my door I walked down the steps yelling:

"I wouldn't do that if i were you"
They turned around.
"Another person, I was starting to loose hope!"
She walked towards me but stopped when she saw my gun.
"We mean you no harm."
"I'd rather be safe than sorry"
"Under these circumstances I fully understand, but we need help!"
I put down my gun, but I kept my hand on my machete as I walked up to them.
"Carelessly walking about an apartment complex, you need more help than you'd guess."
"What do you mean by that?"
I opened the door to the apartment.
"You see that?"
I pointed to a wire just above the floor.
"That wire leads to a spring loaded machete, trip it and you get cut real good."
"A booby trap!"
"And it almost got you, I'm surprised your still surviving in this fine world of ours!"
She looked at the girl for some seconds.
"Whatever, look, we just need some food, we haven't eaten in over a day."
"And I should share my supplies with you? Why?"
"Please, if we don't get food soon we'll die!"
"If I give you food your just gonna go back outside and get eaten yourself, waste of food."
She looked angry now.
"Think you could do much better?"
"I've survived over a month in this city, I know every backstreet and just where to get supplies..."
"Then teach us!"
That took me off guard.
"You want me to teach you about surviving in Nevergreen?"
"If you know everything it shouldn't be that hard for you, or do you?"
A challenge, or maybe a purpose...
"You know what, you got a deal."
"Huh?"
I guess she didn't really think I would accept.
"You help me scavenge for supplies, I give you food and teach you how to survive."
"Wait, are you serious?"
"Yep."
I grabbed two of the rations I had in my jacket and gave handed them over.
"It doesn't taste to good but it gets the job done, I'm Duke by the way."
"Call me Kerra, this is my little sister Liz."

Chapter 3

Chapter 3: Other survivors - "Friendlies"

Your not alone in this world, even if it really feels like it at times.
Others also scrape a living whilst fighting the hoards and other survivors alike.

Let's start with the ones that I would class as friendlies.

Survivors:
A simple person trying to survive, most of them died in a week or two, but some still roam around, trying to find friends or family.
They don't have much in the ways of supplies and normally no weapons either.
Easy targets some would say, waste of time and/or ammo I say...

Scavengers:
The make a living by looking for supplies where others don't look or just simply want to because it looks to "dangerous".
They usually move in groups of 2 or 3, whilst they normally belong to a greater group, taking turns in scavenging outside the camp.
They are usually open to trade and wont shoot you on sight, however they will probably keep their guns pointed at you until you go away.

"Chosen Ones":
For some reason these people have gotten it in to their head that they alone will save us all, be it religious reasons or simply that they have gone insane.
Travels alone but sometimes they have a little cheerleader with them.
Reluctant when it comes to trading but they hoard a lot of stuff, as they seem to travel between cities.
Also a sub-category in the chapter about lunatics.

Some would say that you can't simply categorize people, everyone is different.
To them I say, after what everyone has seen this in this month that has passed, people seem to have similar ways to cope with it all and similar ideas about what to do if you want to survive, so it really is that simple to categorize them.

Intermission 2

Intermission 2: A slight detour.

A couple of people was inside, but by the sound of dragging feet I'm pretty sure they ain't alive.
As I entered the room I could see 3 of THEM shambling around aimlessly, I can't avoid them the food is in this room, I got to deal with them...

I pulled out my bat and taped the wall a couple of times, this got the attention of one of them.

It slowly shambled its way over to me and just when it got close enough...
*SMACK*
... I hit it dead center in the head.

The smell of blood in the air and the sound of a skull splitting open got the attention of the other two.
One of them tripped over a chair, they really are dumb...
As it struggled to get of the chair I took care of the other one.
*SMACK*
Still stuck on the chair?
I can fix that.
I stepped on its neck, keeping its head down.
*CRACK*
Damn, I got brains all over my shoes...

I went into the toilet and removed one of the floor tiles, there it was, a big gym bag filled with military rations.

I took what I needed, replaced the floor tile and headed back to the apartment.

Chapter 2

Chapter 2: Weapons

Now the part that everyone loves, weapons.

A gun is an important tool in this world of ours, but not against THEM, to loud, all you do is attract more of them, but if someone stands in your way, a gun is usually the simplest solution, but like I said they make a ton of noise, if you have to shoot someone you better not hang around for long.

I got my hands on a m1911, always loved this gun and now more than ever.

Usually the best way to deal with THEM is simply to avoid them, they are dumb and slow, but if you gotta off one, a melee weapon is a lot better, if nothing else a lot quieter, if you can stand getting a bit of blood on you.

For that I have a machete and a bat, the machete might not be that good against THEM, the only way to kill them is to destroy the brain, but you can slice the throat of raiders and such without drawing to much attention, the bat however is all about making heads disappear in a red cloud.

One good swing is all you need...

Intermission 1

Intermission 1: A simple run.

I looked out the window of my apartment but all I could see was broken cars, rubble, blood and some things that I really didn't want to think about...

I had some food, but why waste it,  I'd rather keep that for a rainy day.
There was a stash not to far from here, I was smart enough to hide it someplace safe, someplace out of sight, someplace where no one would look if it was food they where after.

I grabber my jacket and checked my gear...
... Yep, that's about everything i need.

Life was simple now, wake up, eat, scavenge, get back home, eat again, keep watch for an hour or two, sleep, then do it all again.

Happy?
I'm alive, I don't care...

The path was simple, get to the roof then take the fire escape down to a back alley, follow said alley, leg it across the street into yet another alley and then just take the back entrance to a certain furniture shop.

Normally this place is deserted, but not today...
